Towards Lesbian Erotica
Lipman 033, Thursday, 4pm
University of Northumbria, Newcastle, UK
Stories about lesbian erotica tend to begin in the 1980s with pioneering magazines such as On Our Backs and Bad Attitude and the development of home video. Yet the confluence of progressive sex education and feminist critiques of photography and the moving image in the 1970s frames the earliest feminist representations of lesbian sex on screen. This screening features the late and greatly missed Barbara Hammer’s groundbreaking short Dyketactics, 1974, and turns to the practice of lesbian erotica at a moment of emergence in the context of lesbian feminist communities in the US.
